Reducing Energy Costs: Home Insulation

3:28 PM Posted by Centsible Mommy

Okay, so I have been on 2 kicks lately-going green and reducing household costs. I just love it when the 2 pair up as it makes the act of being frugal seem more meaningful. Well in my last post, I shared information on reducing energy costs by switching to CFL bulbs. Want to read that? Go here. In this post, I explore even more ways of reducing household energy costs. Well for starters everyone knows about the high price of heating or cooling a home, it accounts for 50 to 70% of energy used in the American home. One way to reduce these costs is to have your home insulated as this lowers your heating and cooling bills.

Insulation:

  • saves money and our nation’s limited energy resources by reducing the amount of energy needed to het/cool your home

  • makes your house more comfortable by helping to maintain a uniform temperature throughout the house, and

  • makes walls, ceilings, and floors warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer

Thus, in addition, to this newly found comfort that insulation provides your home and the reduction in energy costs, you are also helping the environment by reducing the amount of energy pollution and green house gases caused by excessive energy use.

Sounds great right, save money and help the environment while doing so? To top all that off there are now some environmentally friendly formaldehyde free and recycled materials forms of insulation that have replaced the not so friendly chemical based insulation of the days of old.

If you are in the Western Kentucky, Northwest Tennessee, Southern Illinois, Southeast Missouri, and Southern Indiana areas and are looking for an environmentally friendly insulation for your home and a professional to install it, visit the Ecosafe Insulation website to contact a professional installer.

Reducing Energy Costs: Change a Light Bulb, Save Money, & Save the World???

3:10 PM Posted by Centsible Mommy

The incandescent light bulb, one of the most venerable inventions of its era now deemed too inefficient for our own, will be phased off the U.S. market beginning in 2012 under the new energy law approved by Congress this past December. Edison’s light bulb will be replaced by compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb.

So what does all that mean to us? Well, from an economic standpoint, CFL bulbs are said to reduce household energy costs significantly-use this calculator from Energystar to see what you can save by switching to CFL bulbs. And it also significantly reduces greenhouse gases by reducing the amount of energy used-which in turn reduces the amount of energy pollution.

Sounds great right?? Well, there is one downside to these CFL lights, they contain mercury which is toxic, so these bulbs must be specially handled when broken as well as disposed of. Go here to learn about proper clean-up and disposal as the they can pose a threat to your health if broken or if they seep into our ground water.

You can also take the energystar Change a Light, Change the World Pledge here.

You will have to eventually use these, so I figure we may as well start now, save money and most importantly help the environment.

Have you already switched to CFL bulbs? Did you notice significant savings? Please tell me about it.

Centsible Buys: Free Items at Wal-Mart

Okay, so if you combine some coupons with the sale/low prices at Walmart, these items should be free! (pay tax of course)

Speedsticks & Lady Speedsticks are on sale for $1.00 (not trial sizes). print out two $1.00 off coupons from Smart Source . I can never get smartsource coupons to print for me, but hopefully you can.

Also, if you head on over to Colgate/Palmolive’s coupon and promotion page, you can register for their printable coupons. Once you reach the actual coupons, there are three separate pages…under the Oral Care link you’ll see a coupon for $1.00 off of Colgate 360 toothbrush. The coupon that will print out though actually states on it “Save $1.00 on any Colgate Adult Manual Toothbrush.” My local Walmart sells their cheapest Colgate adult toothbrushes for $0.96 give or take a penny.

Buy Zantac Cool Mint at $3.98. (This is the regular price, so you can do this anytime.). Use this coupon for $5 off. Enjoy your $1.02 overage! (You may or may not get overage on this, but you should be able to get this for free for sure.)
